Dental Extractions – Information for Patients
On the day of treatment
- Rest for a few hours (you do not have to lie down). Avoid strenuous exercise.
- Do not rinse or gargle for at least 24hrs.
- Avoid hot fluids, alcohol, hard or chewy foods.
- Do not smoke for at least 24 hours.
- Do not poke, prod or play with the area.
- Should the area start bleeding, roll up a clean cotton tissue, apply to the area and bite firmly for 5-10 mins or longer if necessary. If prolonged bleeding occurs, contact your dentist.
- Mild pain and soreness is to be expected, this can be relieved by taking an analgesic such as Paracetamol or Ibuprofen, should the pain worsen after 48 hours contact your dentist.
On the day after the treatment
Rinse your mouth with a warm salty mouthwash three times daily (after every meal) to ensure that no food gets trapped in the area and to reduce the risk of infection. Continue this for five days
