Autumn ’21 Newsletter – a message from Ciara

To all our friends and patients,

Autumn, ‘Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’, as the poet Keats so eloquently put it, is upon us. Summer is saying goodbye, but yet the trees are a kaleidoscope of colour and swallows twitter happily in the sky. It’s a season often described as bittersweet, which just happens to be the very feeling at Mullan Gallagher this autumn, as we see the retirement of my long-standing colleague and very good friend Fiona Loughlin.

A dentist in our practice for more than 30 years, her wonderful skill, caring professionalism and down to earth advice made her an integral part of our team. Fiona’s wit, good humour, her gourmet preferences and refreshing honesty will be missed by everyone. (She could turn an ordinary morning into a hilarious one with a sentence or a gesture.) Though sad to see her go, we send Fiona every good wish for a happy, healthy and fulfilled future.

There is an old saying that in life we must trust that an ending is followed by a beginning. In this spirit we welcome Katie Dolaghan who starts with us at the end of October.  Joining us with a reputation for her enthusiasm, skill and excellent patient care, Katie is a welcome addition to the clinical team at Mullan Gallagher.

As always, we would like to thank you, our patients for your continued co-operation in adhering to our health and safety protocols, including facemasks and social distancing. We appreciate this can be difficult as restrictions are easing in other public places, but know you understand that healthcare settings are unique environments and that protocols are there to keep all of us safe.

Finally, on another positive note, we have begun to zone our diary, setting aside time every day for a small number of routine check-ups. We are also planning dedicated children’s days for the next set of school holidays and look forward to seeing you soon.  Remember too that if you need us for urgent or emergency care, we will be there for you.

With every best wish,

Ciara

December ‘20 Newsletter – message from Ciara

A message from Ciara Mullan Gallagher Dental Practice Downpatrick

Welcome to our Christmas newsletter, the last one of this most unique year.

Looking back, it seems unbelievable that we went from full-service dentistry, to being closed for all but emergency care within the space of that week in March which altered life as we know it and when the full impact of a global pandemic became a reality for us all.

I am grateful for our good natured, highly skilled Mullan Gallagher team, and appreciative of you our loyal patients during 2020. Everyone has been so cooperative, understanding and accepting of the multitude of changes. Everyone’s compliance enabled us to safely go back to doing what we love best in July, caring for you and creating bright confident smiles.

Looking forward, restrictions such the fallow time and social distancing have reduced our capacity, but will we always make sure that those who need us most are seen quickly and we will begin our mammoth check-up catch-up in earnest in January. We have a system, we will get there, but if you feel you have slipped through the net, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

We are an essential service and will remain open during the new wave of restrictions coming into force on the 26th December. I hope you enjoy your preparations for what will be a simpler yet hopefully still magical season.

Stay safe and well

Ciara

A message from Ciara – August Newsletter

And we’re back!!…we’re hot and sticky under all that PPE, we’re not standing still in case someone cleans us down or throws us away, but we’re very much back and looking forward to seeing you!

Last month was a massive challenge, one which saw our practice going from phone triage and limited hands-on urgent treatment only, back to full service dentistry (albeit at a reduced pace due to the new practicing guidelines). The multiplicity of things that are either temporarily or permanently altered felt like doing our job whilst juggling plates and wrapped in a bin bag!. But we have our systems and processes well refined, our standard operational guidance is under constant review and everything we do has safety at its core…

We are working flat out to get through the backlog of treatments that were postponed due to lockdown and dental problems that developed during lockdown. We have had to zone our diaries to allow for fallow time following an AGP, social distancing and to allow time additional cleaning and for donning and doffing our enhanced PPE. This means that we are operating at a much-reduced capacity.

We are booking just six weeks ahead rather than our usual months. Regulations and restrictions (especially fallow time) are constantly under review and are likely to change again, so rather than book and cancel appointments, we are steadily opening slots in keeping with the latest guidelines. So, while we want to say yes, sometimes we have to suffix it with a ‘but’ or a ‘not yet’, yes, but not for a few weeks, yes but not yet, yes, when we open up the diary. We will get there and we will get all caught up, in the meantime, please bear with us, safe and slow. Whilst surgery time is limited, digital and phone consultations are readily available so if you would like to speak with one of our clinical team please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

I cannot finish this month’s introduction without giving credit to the team here at MG, I commend them on their adaptability, flexibility, loyalty dedication and industriousness, all of which were required in swathes as we gradually reopened our practice to provide safe effective dental care. Their willingness to embrace the challenge of utterly reinventing how they care for you has been an inspiration. It is a pleasure and a privilege to be a member of this team and it is a genuine joy to reconnect with you, our loyal patients.

See you soon,

Ciara

July’s Message from Ciara

Dear Patients and Friends,

I hope the easing of lockdown is finding you and your family well. Thank-you so much for your loyalty and patience during this last 14 weeks, to quote an oft-used phrase, ‘it has been the strangest of times’, for some an opportunity to reconnect with loved ones, step off the treadmill and reassess, for others a time of uninvited and unwelcome solitude.

My version of lockdown was trying to make sense of the ever-changing debate surrounding the provision of dentistry during Covid, consuming and applying endless standard operating procedures, securing PPE, organising urgent and emergency care rotas, redesigning the practice and workflow and attending more zoom meetings and webinars than I ever dreamed possible…When placed on paper, it seems like a daily dose of chasing my tail!

As we begin our journey towards reopening dentistry, I would like to take this opportunity to commend our dentists and all our clinical team for their incredibly hard work during lockdown. They provided emergency and urgent dental care for our own patients, those from Edelweiss Clinic in Strangford and all unregistered patients who needed help, seven days a week throughout this extraordinarily challenging time.

Like almost every other aspect of our lives, the way we provide dentistry has changed; the new PPE, the ‘fallow time’ after we use our drills and a locked door are just a few of unfamiliar aspects of what was previously so familiar. All these changes have at their heart safety, yours, our teams and of course that of our whole community, safety is our first priority and we appreciate your patience as we adapt to the new world in which we work.

Over the next few weeks we will work through our patient lists, those who were mid-treatment when lockdown was announced, anyone who had trouble during lockdown and those many patients who have had routine examinations cancelled, we want to get you back to your regular dental health reviews as soon as possible.

Over the months ahead, we will gradually bring back all of the services that you require. The pace at which this happens will be dictated by guidance and also by the availability of the PPE we are currently required to wear. There has been an unprecedented world-wide demand for PPE, so the supply chain is under pressure and we are not always placed top of the queue.

If you are in pain, or have an urgent dental problem we will always make this a priority, you might not always see your regular dentist, it may another member of our clinical team who is on duty, but we will always ensure that you are seen promptly and your problem is solved.

Returning to dentistry feels like learning a new dance, we know the steps, we have done the training, we’ve bought the costumes and planned the choreography, we’ve rehearsed, rewritten reviewed and are ready to open. Each day we’ll review our performance and make the necessary changes, we’re working as hard as we can to get our timings right and get back up to speed, so please bear with us as our team get together to learn the new ‘dance steps’ of dentistry 2.0.

We appreciate your loyalty over the last few months, without your support, we don’t exist.

Thank you for being our patient

See you soon

A message from Ciara – Newsletter June 2020

Dear Patients and Friends, I can’t believe it is more than two months since lockdown began, the days and weeks have gone in a blur and at a snail’s pace all at the same time. It has been an interesting and not always comfortable journey; proximity in a way we have never known before, uncertainties in every aspect of our lives, our jobs, our health and our finances and I think it has tested all of us. It is with no small relief (especially from my family… ‘give it up mum, we are not the Waltons!!lol) that although there are no fixed dates yet, there is finally a roadmap for reopening dentistry. The team will keep you up to date with the timeline for this roadmap via all our usual channels.. e-mail, facebook, Instagram and website. During the last 11 weeks when we couldn’t see you for routine care, we have spent the time upgrading our practice, our systems our processes and our knowledge. We have sourced enhanced PPE (gowns and masks aren’t just for haloween!) and developed measures to keep you and our team even safer. With additional time on their hands, some of our team have also learned new skills unrelated to dentistry which I’m keen to share. I have really missed the buzz of our busy friendly welcoming practice and look forward to the return of this. In the meantime, for everyone’s benefit, it will be a slow steady start (like switching on a dimmer light) so please bear with us as we accommodate our new systems. I’m really looking forward to seeing you again, to having our full team back together and to getting away from the fridge!!   Best Wishes, Stay well Ciara BDS MFGDP Practice owner MGDC
